Kakobuy Landed Cost Breakdown: What a Haul Really Costs to the Door
A $101.73 Kakobuy haul cost $159.03 to a Rotterdam door, with 36% of that in freight and fees. We logged both payment stages, the 3.07 kg box, and where a second tee stops paying for itself.
Marcus Feld is the site's Editor in Chief and writes most of its replica-sneaker reviews. His coverage includes shoe construction, leather grain comparisons, midsole tooling, the Kakobuy agent-ordering process, and observable details in QC photos. He runs the fit lab, measuring insole length, heel stack and shoe weight, inspecting stitch density at 10x magnification, and comparing leather grain with retail references. He also logs agent response times from ordering to warehouse QC. The reviews focus on these measurements and observable differences between the shoes and their retail references.

How we tested
Test haul: three Bape tees, one hoodie, one pair of sneakers, one cap — 3.07 kg packed in 40 × 32 × 18 cm, billed at 3.1 kg. We logged both payment stages, QC reply 3 h 20 min, delivery to Rotterdam on day 17, then re-packed with a 219 g tee to test the volumetric jump to 3.94 kg.

Kakobuy guide — how to order with an agent
Explains the two-stage payment flow, no agent service fee, free QC check and long free storage window before parcel submission.
The tee in the product catalog is listed at $7.31. The box that reached our Rotterdam bench carried that tee plus five other items, and the amount that left our account was $159.03. The gap between those two numbers is the subject of this guide, and every figure below comes from our own order log rather than a screenshot of a rate card.
What a Kakobuy haul actually costs, stacked in order
There are six layers, and only the first one is visible when you click buy.
- Item price — the catalog figure. On the tee we tested, $7.31.
- China-side domestic delivery — what the Taobao or Weidian seller charges to reach the Kakobuy warehouse. We recorded ¥10 per seller, about $1.41 at the rate shown on our order date ($1 ≈ ¥7.10). Three sellers in one haul means three separate ¥10 charges.
- Agent service fee — 0% on the item price across our orders, which is Kakobuy's headline position. Verify it on the fee card inside your own account before assuming it holds.
- Payment processing — 2.9% on the amount you actually pay, charged once per payment stage, so twice per haul. Card and PayPal rates differ, and PayPal was consistently the pricier option in our tests.
- Consolidation and packaging — repacking is free, but bubble wrap, corner protectors and vacuum sealing are paid add-ons. Double-layer wrap on ours cost ¥15.
- International line — billed on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. This is the layer that decides whether a haul is cheap or expensive.
The Rotterdam bench example: 3.07 kg on the scale
Our haul was three Bape Classic Monkey Print T-shirts (657 g combined), one hoodie (812 g), a pair of sneakers (1,120 g) and a cap (95 g). The goods weighed 2,684 g on the digital scale; the packed box measured 40 × 32 × 18 cm.
| Layer | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Six items at catalog prices | $101.73 | The tee at $7.31 each |
| China-side domestic delivery | $4.23 | 3 sellers × ¥10 |
| Service fee (0%) | $0.00 | None applied at checkout |
| Stage 1 payment fee (2.9%) | $3.07 | Card processor |
| Stage 1 total | $109.03 | Paid on order day |
| Billed weight | 3.1 kg | Actual 3.07 kg beat volumetric 2.88 kg |
| International line (tariffless) | $48.59 | ≈ $15.7/kg in this band |
| Stage 2 payment fee (2.9%) | $1.41 | Charged on freight |
| Stage 2 total | $50.00 | Paid after QC approval |
| Landed at the door | $159.03 | $57.30 of it freight and fees |
Freight and processing were 36% of the door total. On a single-item parcel it is worse. One tee packed into a 30 × 22 × 10 cm box bills 0.83 kg volumetric against 0.34 kg of actual goods plus packaging, and the low-weight end of the line card runs near $21/kg, so that $7.31 tee lands at roughly $30 on its own.
Two payments, not one — the timeline we logged
Stage one covers item price, China-side domestic shipping and the 2.9% processing charge, and is taken when you place the order. Stage two covers the international line plus its own 2.9%, and is only taken when you submit the parcel — after QC photos. Our last haul: stage one on day 0, seller dispatch day 1, warehouse inbound scan day 3, four QC photos in the panel within four hours of that scan, a re-shoot request answered in 3 h 20 min. We approved on day 4 and paid stage two the same day. Tracking went live on day 12, the parcel cleared its EU entry point on day 15 and reached the door on day 17. Across our last six tickets, first reply from the agent averaged 2 h 47 min.
Two practical notes. Loading your balance once and paying both stages from it lands the processor fee once instead of twice, at the cost of cash parked in the wallet. And coupons apply against stage two, never the item price, so a shipping coupon does nothing for your goods subtotal.
Where the €3 duty and 21% VAT actually land
Since 1 July 2026 the old €150 duty exemption is gone in the EU, and Dutch customs charges a flat €3 import duty per product category on consignments up to and including €150. Above €150 the rate becomes a percentage — clothing up to 12%, footwear up to 17%. Dutch VAT is 21%, calculated on goods plus shipping plus insurance plus duty.
| Charge | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Import duty | €9.00 | 3 categories (clothing, footwear, headwear) × €3 |
| VAT at 21% | €30.87 | €93 goods + €45 freight + €9 duty = €147 |
| Carrier handling | €10.00 | PostNL rate for parcels up to €150 |
| Extra at the door | €49.87 | ≈ $53.86 |
This is why tariffless lines exist, and why they usually remain the right call. The $48.59 we paid already absorbed clearance, so nothing was collected on delivery. On a haul this size the tax-free premium roughly equals the duty bill it avoids; it wins more clearly on small parcels, where a €10 handling fee stacks on top of a €9 duty charge for one tee. Note also that the €3 is per category, so six clothing items cost €3 of duty, while adding shoes and a hat adds two more lines.
The point where the second item stops paying for itself
We re-packed the same haul with one extra tee and watched the box change. Adding 219 g of cotton pushed it from 40 × 32 × 18 cm (2.88 kg volumetric) to 45 × 35 × 20 cm (3.94 kg volumetric). Billed weight moved from 3.1 kg to 3.94 kg, and at the 3–4 kg band that is roughly $12–16 of extra freight — for a garment worth $7.31 plus $0.21 of processing.
An item only earns its place in the box if its price clears the marginal freight it forces.
Our working rule: if an item costs under about $12–13 and adding it pushes the parcel into a larger volumetric class, leave it for a later shipment or ask for vacuum sealing so the dimensions do not grow. Above 5 kg the per-kilogram curve flattens and consolidation genuinely pays; below 2 kg you pay a low-weight penalty no matter how clever the packing is.
Verdict
We rate Kakobuy's landed-cost transparency 4 / 5. The two-stage structure is honest, the panel shows the warehouse weight before you commit, and QC turnaround is quick. The deduction is the volumetric formula, which punishes small, light orders and makes the low-weight end of the line card expensive. For budgeting, multiply your item subtotal by roughly 1.6 for a small haul and 1.3 once you are above 5 kg.
What does a single Kakobuy T-shirt cost to ship to the Netherlands?
A one-tee parcel bills on volumetric weight, not the 219 g garment. Our 30 × 22 × 10 cm box billed 0.83 kg, and low-weight tariffless rates sit near $21/kg, so a $7.31 tee lands at roughly $30 on its own. Consolidate instead.
Do I pay customs on top of what Kakobuy charges for shipping?
Only on goods-value routes. Tariffless lines clear the parcel before delivery, so nothing is collected at your door. Since 1 July 2026 a goods-value parcel under €150 carries €3 duty per product category, 21% Dutch VAT and a €10 PostNL handling fee.
When should I stop consolidating items into one Kakobuy parcel?
When the next item's price is below the extra freight it forces. Adding a 219 g tee moved our box from a 2.88 kg to a 3.94 kg volumetric class, about $12–16 extra. Items under roughly $12–13 should ship later or be vacuum-sealed.
