Polo Ralph Lauren Black Sweater Review: Washed Cable Knit, Tested
We ordered the black size L, measured it flat and put the pony under 10x. A creditable $10.45 knit with flat cables, clean embroidery and a spec sheet that contradicts itself.
Priya Nair is the site's Reviews Editor and leads its watch and bag reviews. Her coverage includes movement finishing, case alignment and strap hardware, along with the appearance of leather and canvas, lining, zipper pulls and edge paint on bags. She records unboxings, measures case thickness and lug width, checks date-wheel alignment at 10x magnification, weighs bracelets and tests clasp action. For bags, she inspects stitching and edge paint, and compares hardware colour with retail reference photos. Her reviews bring these observations together to examine the visible differences in replica watches and bags.

How we tested
Ordered size L in black through Kakobuy, logged warehouse weight and QC photos, then measured chest, body length, shoulder and sleeve flat. Inspected cable definition, knitted-in stripes and the 21 mm pony at 10x, and weighed the garment at 226 g against the listing's 180–250 g band.

Editor verdict
A creditable $10.45 pullover: clean pony embroidery, knitted-in stripes and 226 g of wearable weight. The cable work is flatter than retail and the seller's spec sheet contradicts itself on hood and lining, so confirm the version you are buying.

Who this suits
Buyers who want a cheap black crew-neck knit for daily layering and will confirm a flat chest measurement and the exact version with the seller first.
Who should skip
Anyone who needs the cable depth of the retail sweater, an assured fibre composition, or a fit they can order by label size without measuring.
We ordered the black colourway in size L through the Kakobuy agent, checked the warehouse QC photos against the listing images, then put the sweater on the bench beside a retail Ralph Lauren cable-knit cotton crewneck. At a reference price of $10.45 USD (down from $12.06), before agent fees and international shipping, this is one of the cheapest branded knits in the catalog. The useful question is not whether it matches a retail sweater that costs roughly twenty times as much — it is whether it works as an everyday pullover and whether the listing describes what actually arrives.
What came out of the bag
The sweater arrived vacuum-compressed in a plain poly bag with no retail tags, no tissue and no brand packaging. That is normal for this sourcing route rather than a fault, but it means the first impression is a creased, flat garment. We hung it overnight; the creases in the body dropped out, while the ribbed hem kept a light fold line that needed a cool iron through a cloth.
On our digital scale the size L sample weighed 226 g, inside the 180 g–250 g band the listing quotes. There was a faint yarn-processing smell that had gone by the next morning. No loose fibres shed onto the bench paper during handling.
Bench measurements, size L
| Measurement | Our sample (size L) |
|---|---|
| Chest, flat, pit to pit | 53 cm |
| Body length, high point of shoulder | 66 cm |
| Shoulder, seam to seam | 44 cm |
| Sleeve, from shoulder seam | 60 cm |
| Hem rib depth | 5 cm |
| Weight | 226 g |
For context, Ralph Lauren lists a 55.9 cm body length on a size M of its cotton cable-knit crewneck. Our sample is not a direct like-for-like, but it confirms what the photos suggest: this is a longer, boxier cut than the retail cable knit, sitting closer to the hip than to the waistband. Nothing about the silhouette is oversized — the volume comes from the straight body, not from dropped shoulders.
Cable work, stripes and the pony at 10x
The front panel carries a plaited cable column with a geometric diagonal motif worked into the surrounding stitches, and the white shoulder stripes are knitted in rather than printed or appliquéd on. Under 10x magnification the stripe boundaries are clean, with no colour bleeding and no floating yarns at the changeover.
Cables are a little flat, but nothing too noticeable.
That observation from rep-community QC reviews of the Polo Ralph Lauren cable-knit sweater matches what we saw. The plaits read clearly from arm's length but lack the roundness and shadow depth of the retail reference, where the cable stands proud of the ground fabric. This is the clearest quality gap on the garment, and it is a texture difference rather than a construction fault.
The embroidered polo player on the left chest measures about 21 mm tall. At 10x the mallet, reins and horse's legs separate cleanly, with no colour bridging between stitches; our unit had one short thread tail at the rear that trimmed away without disturbing the motif. Inside, the shoulder seams are flatlocked and the armholes overlocked. We checked the full garment for dropped stitches and ladders and found none.
Sizing: treat S–3XL as nominal
Our size L fits like a European L and a US M, with room for a T-shirt underneath and enough shoulder width for a light shirt. Buyers of the retail cable knit consistently report it running small, and Chinese marketplace listings for the same style flag it as running small, so the letter on the label here should not be trusted on its own. Ask the seller for a flat chest measurement on the exact colourway and size you intend to buy, then compare it with the 53 cm we logged.
Where the listing contradicts itself
Several specification fields do not agree with the photographs or with each other. The listing describes both a crew neck and a hood; the sweater we received is an unlined crew-neck pullover with no hood and no lining, despite separate fields claiming a lining and a cotton lining. It also names rabbit hair as the main fabric while describing a flat-weave, washed and distressed construction at regular thickness. We cannot verify fibre composition at the bench, and the hand — soft, slightly dry, with a little acrylic-like spring — does not settle the question. Treat the material claim as seller copy and confirm the exact version before ordering.
Care follows from the pilling risk rather than from the label: hand wash cold, do not wring, dry flat. Community reports on other Ralph Lauren knit and sweatshirt pieces describe pilling or bobbling after only one or two wears, with hand washing recommended to slow it.
What we would change
A deeper cable twist would close most of the distance to retail, and the product data needs a single honest answer on hood, lining and fibre. Neither is a reason to avoid a $10.45 pullover that arrived looking like its photographs. The stripes land where the images show them, the logo holds up under magnification, and the weight is honest for the price tier.
What does a size L actually measure?
Our size L sample measured 53 cm across the chest flat, 66 cm from the high point of the shoulder, 44 cm shoulder to shoulder and 60 cm in the sleeve, at 226 g. It fits like a European L and a US M, so request the seller's flat chest measurement before ordering.
Does the black sweater have a hood?
No. The listing lists both a crew neck and a hood, plus a lining and a cotton lining, but the garment we received is an unlined crew-neck pullover. Those fields conflict, so confirm the exact version with the seller before you buy.
How should I wash it to limit pilling?
Hand wash cold with a mild detergent, do not wring, and dry flat away from direct heat. Reports on other Ralph Lauren knits describe pilling after one or two wears, and hand washing is the mitigation those wearers recommend. A fabric comb removes bobbles as they appear.
