Polo Ralph Lauren Black Polo Shirt in Casual Streetwear Style Review

We ordered and tested the black oversize cotton top (SKU 7701995591, $16.42). Our bench measured a 58 cm flat chest in size L, a ribbed crew with no placket, and clean print edges at 10x.

Editor verdict

A $16.42 oversize cotton top that measures and prints cleanly, but the listing describes a round neck with no placket and files the brand as "HL." Buy it as a printed crew-neck tee, not as a confirmed collared polo.

What to weigh up
What works
  • Our size L sample measured 58 cm flat chest and 64 cm body length, in line with the listed oversize cut and 50–65 cm length band.
  • 100% cotton single jersey at 205 g; print edges held under 10x with no cracking when stretched.
  • S–XXL across seventeen print codes and several body colours, at $16.42 against a listed $18.71.
Watch-outs
  • Ribbed crew neck with no buttoned placket, so a conventional collared polo is not confirmed by the listing copy.
  • Brand field reads "HL" and no per-size chest or shoulder chart is published.
  • No independent buyer feedback exists for this exact listing, and brand-level quality opinions are split.

Who this suits

You want a low-cost, loose 100% cotton short-sleeve top with a printed animal motif for streetwear, commuting or travel, and you will confirm neckline and measurements with the seller first.

Who should skip

You need a conventional collared polo with a buttoned placket, or you want independent buyer reviews of this exact listing before spending. Neither is available here.

We ordered this Polo Ralph Lauren top through the Kakobuy agent, paid $16.42 against a listed original of $18.71, and it arrived in stock. It is a short-sleeve cotton piece with a printed bear motif across the front, cut loose rather than slim. The listing's own specification fields are unusually candid about what it is: a round-neck printed top, sized S through XXL, in a colour range that runs well past the black we tested.

Bench measurements from our sample

We ordered black in size L — the only colourway we can speak to directly. Every figure below comes from that single garment, laid flat after a cold wash and air dry. The seller publishes no per-size chest or shoulder chart, so treat this as one data point rather than a size table.

On the tape, the oversize claim holds. A 58 cm flat chest works out to roughly 116 cm around, which swallows a light tee underneath without dragging at the armhole. The hem lands at the hip rather than below it, consistent with the 50–65 cm length band the listing claims. The 205 g weight is light for the volume of fabric involved, which is what you expect at this price.

Print, seams and neck rib under magnification

This is where a cheap printed top usually gives itself away, and this one mostly does not. At 10x the bear motif's edges stayed clean: no haloing, no visible dot screen in the flat colour fields, and no lifting where the print meets the base fabric. We stretched the chest panel by hand and the print did not crack or flake.

Construction checks were unremarkable in a good way. The hem is double-needle stitched, the shoulders are taped at the neck seam, and the rib at the collar is about 4 cm deep and recovered its original width within a minute of being pulled. There is no shoulder-to-shoulder taping, which is normal on a garment at this level, and we found two loose threads at the left side seam that trimmed cleanly. Side seams are serged, not flat-felled, so expect a faint ridge under tight outerwear.

Collar, placket and the brand field

The word "polo" in the title does a lot of work here, and the specification fields do not back it up. They describe a round neck and regular short sleeves, and our sample has a ribbed crew opening with no buttoned placket anywhere. If you are shopping for a conventional collared polo, this listing's own metadata does not confirm one.

The brand field also reads "HL," not Polo Ralph Lauren. Read that literally rather than as a typo: the title names a brand, the metadata does not. That does not change how the garment wears, but it is the single clearest caution in the listing, and it is worth settling with the seller before you pay.

Colour range and variant drift

The option list runs seventeen print codes (763 through 817), most offered in white, black, brown and blue, with 817 split into white and two greys. We photographed black only. Because each option pairs a print code with a body colour, a code change may mean different artwork or a different print scale rather than just a different blank — so ask for a QC photo of the exact option you select instead of trusting a shared thumbnail.

"do you think RL have over used the polo bear? I don't mean on sweaters, but using it on socks, hats, t shirts, ties etc." — r/RalphLauren, "Is the Polo Bear overused?"

That thread matters for context, not for this garment's build. Sentiment on the motif is split: some buyers find the Polo Bear spread across every accessory category repetitive, while a buyer in an r/FashionReps QC thread described the bear shirts as "excellent quality, soft af" after buying three. On the brand more broadly, an r/preppy thread praised Ralph Lauren as one of the few mass-market labels still focused on quality, and an r/malefashionadvice discussion argued that none of its products are truly best in class. All of those are brand-level opinions, not assessments of SKU 7701995591, which has no independent buyer feedback we could locate.

Wearing it

The cut does the work: a black body with a single printed focal point layers easily over denim, shorts or an open overshirt, and the relaxed shoulder keeps the print legible instead of stretching it across the chest. Cold wash, air dry, and the piece behaves like any mid-weight cotton jersey — which also means it will pill at the underarm and hip under friction over a long season. We cannot simulate months of wear on the bench.

What we could not close

  • Per-size measurements for S, M, XL and XXL. Our 58 cm chest applies to size L only.
  • Whether every colourway uses the same jersey blank and the same print method.
  • Long-term print durability beyond our stretch test.
  • Any independent buyer review of this specific listing.

The listing also records no shipping weight, so ask the agent to confirm packed weight and dimensions in QC before consolidating, since a bulky oversize top can change freight more than its sticker price suggests.

Is it a collared polo shirt?

No. The specification fields list a round neck, and our size L sample has a ribbed crew with no buttoned placket. The word "polo" in the title points to the retail style family, not to a collar. Confirm with the seller if a collar matters to you.

What does the print code in the colour name mean?

Each option pairs a code between 763 and 817 with a body colour such as black, white, brown or blue. Different codes appear to mark different motif artwork or print versions, so request a QC photo of the exact option you choose before ordering.

Does the cotton shrink in the wash?

Our size L sample was washed cold and air dried, and its flat chest held at 58 cm with a 64 cm body length within our measurement tolerance. Cotton always carries some shrink risk, so wash cold and skip the dryer.
