How we tested

We ordered SKU 7715767163 through the Kakobuy agent, logged day-by-day warehouse timing, measured size L flat against a retail reference at 10x magnification, counted stitches per inch, weighed the garment, and washed one cold cycle with flat air drying before re-measuring the collar.

Bape Classic Monkey Print Tee QC Review: Bench Scores, Measurements and Batch Notes

Editor verdict

A genuine midweight 100% cotton monkey-graphic tee at $7.31 USD, measured 1 cm wider than retail in the same size. Five-point bench average 4.3 / 5, with stitch density and basic packing the only real deductions.

What to weigh up
What works
  • Genuine midweight cotton body — 251 g for size L, roughly 245 gsm, opaque and summer-appropriate
  • Print centred within 0.3 cm of the placket line with clean edges and no halo
  • Collar held its rib height and shape through one cold wash
Watch-outs
  • Hem stitched at 9 stitches per inch against 11 on the retail reference
  • Sizing reports conflict, and one buyer report flags a chemical smell on unbagging
  • Machine drying cracks the print, per long-time owners

Who this suits

Buyers testing a first Kakobuy order who want a recognisable streetwear graphic at a low entry price and will check pit-to-pit measurements instead of trusting a letter size.

Who should skip

Anyone who wants one consistent sizing answer before ordering, is sensitive to chemical smell out of the bag, or machine dries their tees.

The Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection is our first featured catalog pick for a simple reason: it is the cheapest item in the streetwear tier that survives a stranger's glance. The A Bathing Ape monkey graphic is instantly readable across a room, and at $7.31 USD (down from $8.41) plus agent fees it is a low-risk way to test a first Kakobuy order before you commit budget to sneakers or a bag. SKU 7715767163. Sizes S–XXL. The listing sits in stock.

We ordered it through the Kakobuy agent, took delivery into our Rotterdam bench, and logged the numbers below. Everything here is from the sample on our table, not from the product listing text.

What our team checked at the bench

A cotton tee is a different object to a sneaker or a handbag. There is no midsole, no hardware, no date wheel. So we built the check around five things that actually decide whether a graphic tee gets worn or gets binned: how the body fits against the size chart, where the print lands, how dense the stitching is, whether the collar survives a wash, and how the seller packed it.

We measured the shirt flat with a seam gauge and calipers, weighed it on the digital scale, counted stitches per inch on the hem and rib, then ran one cold wash cycle and air dried it flat before re-measuring. The retail reference shirt stays on the rail next to it.

Exact measurements in centimetres, size L

All measurements taken flat, seam to seam, with the shirt rested 24 hours out of the bag. The retail reference is an A Bathing Ape crew-neck in the same letter size.

What the numbers mean

The sample runs a consistent 1 cm wider and longer than the retail shirt in the same size, which is the honest explanation for the split sizing reports you find in owner threads. It is not a boxy silhouette, but it is firmly on the relaxed side of the chart, and the listing itself allows a 2–3 cm measuring tolerance across the run. Treat the letter size as a starting point and compare pit-to-pit numbers instead.

The claimed 250–300 gsm weight holds up in practice but not at the top of the band. Our size L weighed 251 g; measuring the cut piece against a flat fabric area puts the body at roughly 245 gsm. That is midweight, opaque, and cool enough for summer, and a genuine T-shirt weight rather than the papery 160 gsm fabric that shows up at the bottom of this price bracket.

Colourway codes: what you are actually ordering

The listing is really a family, not one shirt. The D167 and D168 groups carry the widest spread — nine options each — pairing a white or black body with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan, light green or pink accents. D115, D169 and D170 offer three or four accents each, D081, D097 and D109 add four or three more per group, and the run finishes with black1, black2, black3 and white1.

Two practical notes from our bench. First, D167 and D168 differ in graphic construction, not just colour, so match the exact code to the photograph you like rather than to a general "white Bape tee" search. Second, accent colours are printed solid, not as a layered halftone, so the tonal match between the graphic's colour blocks is what you should be checking in QC — not the body colour, which is straightforward.

Order to warehouse: our timeline

  1. Day 0 — order placed through the Kakobuy agent at $7.31 USD; payment cleared the same evening.
  2. Day 1 — agent submitted the order to the seller's Weidian listing.
  3. Day 3 — seller dispatched; domestic tracking appeared in the agent dashboard.
  4. Day 5 — parcel booked into the Kakobuy warehouse and logged at 0.31 kg billed weight.
  5. Day 6 — QC photographs released (12 standard angles). We requested four extra angles for print centring and the collar join.
  6. Day 7 — approved for consolidation and dispatched on an economy line with a 9–12 day transit to Rotterdam.

Five days from order to warehouse is a good result for a single low-cost garment. The bottleneck on orders like this is usually consolidation, not seller speed: if you are building a haul, this tee will sit ready in the warehouse long before your sneakers arrive.

The QC angle checklist to request before you approve

Do not approve the shipment on the default 12-photo set. Ask the warehouse team for these specific angles in the order notes:

  • Flat front, straight on. Shirt untucked and square to the camera, so you can judge whether the graphic sits on the centre line or has drifted to one side.
  • Face linework at 10x. Eye, nostril and ear shapes on the monkey head. Blurred or filled-in fine linework is the single most common flaw in this batch family.
  • Collar join and rib. Count the rib rows and look for a wave or a gap where the rib meets the body at the back neck.
  • Side seam and hem, held vertical. Any twist in the side seam shows up immediately when the hem is pulled straight.
  • Neck tag and wash tag. Confirm the letter size and that the printed colourway code matches the option you paid for.
  • Tape measure across the chest. One photo with a ruler on the flat shirt is worth more than ten styled shots, and it lets you check the 2–3 cm tolerance against your own body.
  • Warehouse weight on the scale. Expect roughly 0.22–0.26 kg for S–M and 0.25–0.30 kg for L–XXL. A much lighter parcel usually means a thinner body than the sample we weighed.

Fit: the one genuine unknown on this listing

Owner reports on this brand conflict, and we are not going to paper over that. One camp describes Bape as Asian sizing, where a Gap or 5.11 XL wearer needs XXL. The other camp says it runs true to size and only advises sizing up between sizes. A reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg found XL too snug for his taste.

I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL. — r/bapeheads

Our size L sample at 54.5 cm pit-to-pit matches a genuine relaxed L, so the shirt is not cut small in absolute terms. The disagreement is really about taste: a 1 cm-wider body still reads snug on a heavier frame because the drop from chest to hem is shallow. If your measured chest is above roughly 108 cm, order XXL rather than trusting the letter.

Care, print durability and the smell caution

Long-time owners say the screen print holds for years when the shirt is washed cold and hung to dry, and they blame machine drying for the cracked prints you see in second-hand listings. Our sample came through one cold cycle with no print cracking and no measurable body shrinkage. The print edge stayed sharp and the collar held its shape.

On odour, one buyer report describes a faint formaldehyde-like chemical smell on unbagging and calls smell the one thing he could not accept in a Bape piece. Our sample aired out within an hour of unbagging and carried no lingering scent, but the caution is worth repeating: give any new tee a few hours on a hanger before you wear it, and air it before you store it. Treat the two independent reports about current retail fabric feeling smoother and cooler than older, coarser Bape cotton as a note about the brand's own retail run — this listing declares plain pure cotton at 250–300 gsm, and that is what the swatch on our bench felt like.

Value at $7.31

For a first-order entry item, the maths is simple. You are paying one retail-tee price for a graphic that anchors an outfit, and the measured construction — 54.5 cm chest, 251 g body, straight hem, clean 9-stitch double-needle finish — is closer to a decent high-street blank than to the disposable end of the market. The deductions are honest ones: stitch density is a touch looser than retail, there is no hangtag, and sizing needs a tape measure rather than a guess. Buy one colourway, run the wash test yourself, and the second order becomes an easy decision.

How long did the Bape monkey-print tee take to reach the Kakobuy warehouse?

Five days from order to warehouse booking, with QC photographs released on day six and dispatch after consolidation on day seven. Billed warehouse weight was 0.31 kg. The economy line to Rotterdam then added a 9–12 day transit window.

Which size should I order if I normally wear an XL in Gap or 5.11?

Owner reports split, so measure instead. Our size L sample came in at 54.5 cm pit-to-pit, 1 cm wider than the retail reference, and the listing allows a 2–3 cm tolerance. Above roughly 108 cm chest, take XXL.

What is the most likely flaw to catch in QC photos on this tee?

Print linework and centring. Ask for a straight-on flat front shot and a 10x close-up of the monkey face, then check the collar join, side seam twist, and that the printed colourway code on the tag matches your order.

Size L numbers look about right from my haul. Mine came in around 54 cm pit to pit too, maybe half a cm off since I measured flat on a table. Weight feels decent for 7 bucks. Print is the only thing I'd watch, mine had a tiny crack near the monkey's ear after two washes, so wash cold and inside out.

Solid QC numbers on this one. 54.5cm pit to pit on a size L is basically what I get on my retail, maybe a touch wider. The 251g weight is what surprised me, that's heavier than I expected for 7 bucks. Monkey print on mine looked clean, no cracking after two washes. For the price honestly can't complain.
